Love Boat Cruises in Cape Town
Mention The Love Boat to a somewhat mature audience and almost at once, you sense them going back to another time and another place – onto a fictitious Love Boat, an American television series that was aired here during the earlier days of local TV broadcasts. Most South Africans of a certain age group acquired a television set during 1976 – the year in which nationwide broadcasts of this long-awaited medium finally commenced.
No to TV
Prior to 1975, when the SABC started with limited test television broadcasts, South Africans had been denied access to this service by the ruling political party. They feared that control over the national broadcast media and programme content would be placed in jeopardy if TV was allowed here.
When Neil Armstrong made that momentous “one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind” onto the moon on the 20th of July in 1969, an enormous public outcry ensued. South Africans were unable to see world history being made in a live format. Nevertheless, it would still take several years before TV actually became a reality in this country.
The TV Love Boat Arrives
It takes many years and a great deal of money to develop a television infrastructure, industry, and locally made programme content – things which the infant South African television broadcast medium did not have when this service was introduced. Consequently, other than news broadcasts and some children’s programmes, all other programmes were imported.
For the Afrikaans channel, imported programme scripts were dubbed. The American Love Boat became Die Plesierboot (the Pleasure Boat) in this country. This boat, its crew, and ever-changing passenger list shared comedy, loves, and adventure aboard the luxurious SS Pacific Princess as they sailed into South African and international living rooms.
