Tigger 2 Royale
The Tigger 2 Royale, our flagship vessel, is a lovely creature – a beauty to behold. Her sleek 55’ long white lines give a hint about her capabilities in the water – a top speed of 22 knots and a leisurely cruising speed of 12-16 knots, provided by two 530-hp inboard turbo charged motors. The “inboard” location of the motors is worth noting.
Firstly, there are no unsightly outboard motors to mar our modern, sleek double-hull design, the latter being the fundamental feature distinguishing a catamaran from a single hull vessel. In fact, unless you know a basic thing or two about boats, you might not guess that the Tigger 2 Royale is a catamaran. Nevertheless, she is a catamaran and a truly beautiful one at that.
Secondly, because the motors are “hidden” inboard, our passengers are not exposed to the sound of diesel engines. The power is there; this you’ll feel, but there’s no noisy intrusion into your conversation on deck or the incredible tranquillity of being at sea.
Two Hulls (Catamaran) Versus a Single Hull (Boat)
Both types of water craft are known as boats, rather than ships, which are much larger and are used for long voyages, transporting cargo or long leisure voyages. Both of these types of voyages are often intercontinental.
Power to both catamarans and boats may be supplied by wind, in which instance both types of crafts are fitted with sails, or a set of oars with which to row. Alternatively, power is provided by motors, fitted outboard or inboard, as are those that power and propel Tigger 2 Royale across the Cape Town seas.A typical catamaran’s two parallel hulls may be joined by a frame, topped with webbing, or a bridging superstructure that houses cargo or cabin space. The latter applies to Tigger 2 Royale’s design and construction. A catamaran’s multi-hull design provides more width to the vessel than that of a single-hull boat. Additional width makes the craft more stable, reducing the tendency to heel or respond to the continuous motion from waves.
Because there is less hull surface in/on the water, a catamaran is more responsive to the power from its motors. This feature helps to ensure that our Cape Town cruise passengers are very comfortable and less inclined to experience severe motion sickness. Moreover, a smoother cruise prevents passengers from spilling the contents of their glasses of bubbly.
